カイジ 人生逆転ゲーム
Directed by Tōya Satō
Synopsis
Kaiji Ito moves to Japan after graduating from high school. Unable to find a job and frustrated with society at large, Kaiji spends his days gambling, vandalizing cars, and drinking booze. Two years later and his life is no better. A debt collector named Endo arrives to collect money owed. The debt collector offers two choices to Kaiji: spend 10 years paying off his loan or board a gambling boat for one night to repay his debt & possibly make a boat load of money. Could the debt collector Endo actually be setting up Kaiji? One way or another, for Kaiji it's going to be the night of his life.

I am a huge fan of the manga, and I was interested in seeing this adaptation. The anime adaptation is a masterpiece, and I was worried that this film could hold up with the complete 26 episode work.
It could not.
It tried to do some original takes, some were alright, like the different take on Tonegawa, but it mostly falls flat and crashes.
My favourite arc had a good adaptation, but everything else is convoluted and mixed.
The casting is not good, but (!) Tonegawa and Ishida were standouts and perfectly cast. But especially Kaiji himself, is highly miscast. Tatsuya Fujiwara is a good actor, but he absolutely does not fit the role.Do yourself a favour and watch the anime, which is a masterpiece and do not watch this movie, as it will spoil everything.

I see that Animal World just copied the first 30 minutes of this movie and turned it to a full 2 hour movie.
This one is way better.

A completely toothless take on the source material, with additions that are utterly lacking.
To me the core appeal about Kaiji the manga character is, he's this dirtbag who keeps making mistakes and yet you want him to win because he's gambling against some of the worst people humanity has to offer. He's so sincere in his struggles, so willing to do whatever it takes to survive up to the point that he'll cause himself bodily harm if it gives him a chance to win. It's so intense that you just want to see him get a break, for crying out loud!
The live action take on Kaiji makes him more into an affable everyman. He's not an unemployed gambling…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
This movie just bastardizes the entirety of the source material
It keeps most of the twists but executes them immediately with no impact behind them
They adapt the Espoir arc in like 15 minutes, whereas the climax is Kaiji just grabbing some random old man saying "we're together now!, and thus wins the game.
Then the old man he just fucking grabbed is like "Wait I have one more card"
instead of Kaiji either
a) leaving the old man since he won
or b) taking the card from the old man to let him win instead
Kaiji fucking just
shares the card with the old man and goes into underground labor WITH him. Then im like "whoa the dice arc…

Came across this film as a recommendation and had no idea of the manga or anime. Hence, my POV is purely based on this film. Holy fuck, I was kind of disturbed by the overt tones of slavery, greed and cylical poverty — instead of seeing this as a cautionary tale about gambling.
Also, the character of Endo was amazing; to be so ruthless and to then drive around Tokyo with almost 200 million in the back seat, in tall stacks of hard cash no less? Iconic.

This would be better if it held to the source material better, and I think my experience with the broader media has made this a harsher rating. While Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler is certainly intense and engaging, there's obviously a greater height missing from these mountain ranges. Kaiji is peak, but Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler is weak!!!
